 Rating:  - waste of timeTwice I ordered the dvd and twice I got a blank with nothing on it. I would like to see the thing if only I could get one that works. The two I tried get no stars but the thing won't let me. Rating: - Ripped off - this is a documentary, not an instructionalHate is a word I don't throw around in reviews. I HATED THIS dvd. I have NEVER in my life seen a dance dvd that talked more about how to dance than ACTUALLY moved. It's so utterly basic, that if you can stand up or have any confidence in being able to walk across the floor without falling down 25x on the way, you sure don't need this insult-to-breathing-people dvd. I have never seen so much blathering and useless commentary and stream-of-consciousness self-indulgence in so-called 'instructional' dance dvd - and the word 'dance'? Used very loosely, since there is none. If you can walk as slow as humanly possible across the floor (imagine you're dragging two broken legs on a desert island towards the sound of a ship approaching) - you don't need this dvd. You're well-past it in every possible regard. I honest to goodness cannot believe anyone liked this, but even more than that I can't believe people aren't outraged that this is allowed to be called a 'dance workout' or an 'instructional' anything. A room of kume-by-yah-ers aimlessly trying to find their inner sex-kitten? There is NO DANCE. It is SO misdirected, misstepped, misappropriated, and adle-brained and SLOW it's unreal. If it's self-help, lable it as so. If it's documenary and opinion and pop-psych for an hour about how you should love yourself at any size, lable it so. If it's dance instructional, shocking as it is -- I really expect some dancing! It should be labled PRE-DANCE PREPERATION 101. Not "The Art of Exotic Dancing." Or better yet, "Lets Talk about The Art of Exotic Dancing as We all Check to See Who Can Walk and Chew Gum at the Same Time." I can imagine that every dvd can offer something to someone, given that as human beings were are all of different temper and taste and need, but wow, if you are under 85 years old (and even if you're over!) buy this as a last resort and imagine every bad thing you can before you buy it because whatever you're imagining? it's only the tip of the iceburg. Yes, it's really that bad. I was utterly offended. Get Exotic Dance: the Irrestiable Art, which is slow as well, but teaches you lots of moves and is skillful and artful! I've felt ripped off before, and I understand that what you think you are getting is not always to your liking, that's part of the buyer-be-ware - and that's life: but this is so far beyond that, this was an absolute insult to my intelligence in every possible way as a buyer -- and as a dancer, it's white-gloves-face-slapping and pistols-at-dawn. Note: the other two in the series are also documentary-style commentaries/interviews as well. Short on dancing, long on reflecting. Rating:  - Eh, Ok.I bought this thinking it would show more of "how-to" dancing, but instead it was a lot of talking and "encouraging". Not what I needed. Rating:  - Yes, it's basic but greatIt's just what you need to get started. She gives very clear instructions and takes it at a good, slow pace. It's perfect for you to practice while she's teaching. Rating: - Rudimentary but AwesomeThis video was very inspiring! A lot of it is about positive self-talk, about learning to love one's body, and confronting beauty stereotypes. I *love* at the women in it are very real, and that they even including a middle-aged breast cancer patient. You might not think of exotic dancing as being empowering for women (and indeed for some women it isn't), but it truly can be. I've been doing bellydance videos for a while, so this video was much too rudimentary. But I've taught several other women to dance, and every once in a while I'll run across one that just can't let loose, can't love herself and her body enough to take herself serious and let out the inner seductress, who just can't seem to believe in their own sensuality and beauty. If that's you, please buy this DVD! I especially encourage older women to try this out. It's the philosophy behind the video that makes it worth having, not the dancing itself. If you're really just hankering for some new moves and you can already handle yourself on a dance floor, this will be very old news for you. Rent it instead or something -- unless, like me, you're a self-empowerment junky and need a pick-me-up. It's very uplifting just to watch these amateur dancers talk and demonstrate how exotic dance has raised their self-esteems. |
