![]() Rating: - Another excellent book from Ms. Rice!Another great book & hot alpha male in a series of great books. Excellent author. Thanks LMR! Rating: - Beauty and the Beast.... Big, tough and ugly Douglas Kowalski never believed a beautiful angel like Allegra Ennis would give him the time of day. People can barely stand to look him in the eye, much less shake his hand but when Allegra Ennis hears his deep, rumbling voice she's enchanted. His voice is a wonderful, soothing instrument and she doesn't notice his hideous facial scars because she's blind. Several months ago she lost both her father and her sight during a vicious attack and just being near Douglas calms her inner fears and uncertainties. Forced to make her way through a dark and frightening world, Douglas' strength and guidance helps her to overcome her new handicap. He plays with her, loves her and most important of all, helps her to live life again. Douglas has never known a woman like Allegra and never has he cared to before. She has a voice that rivals the angels and a temper that shames the devil. Being with Douglas is one of the happiest moments of Allegra's life, but when she thinks she hears the voice of the man who brutally attacked her, her newfound peace is shattered and she begins to fear for her sanity. The man who attacked her is in a psychiatric prison and can't get to her or so everyone keeps telling her. Even though Douglas checks it out and comes back with reassurances that her attacker is still under guard, she feels him and hears him when no one is around. Certain that she's finally lost it, Allegra tries to send him away but Douglas has finally discovered the type of love that can bring a man to his knees so he's not going anywhere. Instead, he provides round the clock protection and endeavors to keep all her demons at bay, promising to always be there for her. Allegra and Douglas were very cute together. He's a hulking bruiser and she's a beautiful angel. Her handicap makes her vulnerable but Allegra isn't one to stand meekly by. True, her new blindness makes her uncomfortable and uncertain but once Douglas made her feel safe and secure again she opens up and is much more lively and stubborn. She's the most stubborn of the three Midnight ladies and has no problems with telling her big, tough SEAL exactly what to do. To hear her tell him "no" was priceless. Practically all of Douglas' life has been devoted to the military with it's carefully regimented hierarchy so when Allegra tells him "no" or flat out ignores his well thought out and practical advice, he's flabbergasted and ill prepared. While she's definitely not his equal in regards to muscle mass, her Irish temper is more than enough to deal with his autocratic streak and it's fun to watch the sparks fly. The sex in Midnight Angel was sensuous and loving, but not very exciting nor very inventive but it's okay. Love is more than just inventive sex, sometimes all a woman needs is a lover who can just go on and on and on..... Poor Douglas has so much stamina that he wears Allegra out and is literally left high and dry. He's constantly walking around in a semi permanent state of arousal that I'm sure can't be healthy. The plot involving Allegra's manager and his murderous puppet was interesting. His method of revenge was actually pretty inventive but I wish he wasn't so behind the scenes. His puppet was kind of one dimensional and his motivation for attempting to kill Allegra was silly, but again, who cares. I read this book for Douglas and Allegra's blossoming love affair and also to catch glimpses of Suzanne, John and Claire and Bud. I've always enjoyed reading about past couples' happily ever afters and Lisa Marie Rice delivers with little anecdotes from all our favorite couples. This was a good book filled with love and laughter plus awww inspiring tenderness and I for one loved it and hope for more in this loving, sensual series. Enjoy! Rating: - THE PERFECT COUPLE AND STORYThis was the first Lisa Marie's book I read and surely will not be the last! This story is beautiful! Of course, it's romantic! We are not reading a non-fiction book! And it was the first time I read a romantic story which describes the hero as "ugly". In general, the men are always very handsome... Frankly, Douglas for me is the most beautiful of them all... And Allegra, in spite of her exquisite beauty, dealt bravely with her life after what had happened to her. Douglas' passionate support was at the same time touching and enticing. I've already ordered the other two books of this series, "Midnight Man" and "Midnight Run". Congratulations Lisa Marie! Rating: - Midnight AngelI did not like this book; it was boring and predictable. Neither main character appeared real and the story line was not interesting. I was looking for more authentic romance from a book about navy seals. I would not purchase another romance novel about navy seals. Rating: - Entertaining steamy story. It's all about how big ugly Douglas and blind Allegra find hot, earthy true love. In the blink of an eye basically. Seeing how it's an Elloras Cave print novel. There's also a cracking good secondary plot about Allegra being stalked by a low-life killer on the orders of an imprisoned high-life killer. The big let-down is that the psychological tension is built up very effectively but then the whole situation is resolved much too quickly. In the space of one chapter basically. On the other hand. Midnight Angel is a romance. So maybe that's the only plot that needed to be completed properly. Not for one minute did I believe that the main couple have a long-lasting HEA. So much effort was put into depicting Douglas's ugliness. Allegra's gratitude will only last so long. Then it's 'Goodbye Douglas.' Poor man. One broken heart coming up. The story also touches upon issues like what happens when a girl says 'No' to the men in her life. OMG. The author dares to talk about the political affiliations of the hero. I liked that. Then there's all that alpha, red, 3 o'clock stuff which I didn't understand but enjoyed reading through. Also the main couple have shared interests that bind them. Music, good food. However. The heroine does unfortunately express some quite intolerant views about her blindness. No excuse. Seeing how she is probably not a Republican! tee hee. Plus Allegra hasn't even begun to feel any guilt about her part in the father's murder. Did she really have no idea that Corey was a psycho waiting to happen? Of course she did. That's why she asked her Pop to go with her to the contract-breaking meeting with Corey. Really another 2 or 3 chapters minimum should have been written in to make the novel a Stephen King-like tome. Wow! That would have made a magnificent read. |

In Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch, devotees of the dram can peruse the latest revised edition of the 1989 work. In 336 pages brimming with maps, photos, and informed overview of factors such as geography and flavor components--even proximity to the sea--Jackson sketches the evolution of Scotch whisky, from the prebottling days, when shopkeepers like Johnnie Walker and the Chivas Brothers would create their own blends for sale, to the late-1960s and 1970s' surge of individual distilleries marketing their own bottlings. Lamentably labeling the former as a time when "orchestrations drowned out the soloists," Jackson provides some sweet sheet music of his own: 294 pages are devoted to an A-to-Z review (including full-color labels and tasting notes) of more than 800 singles from "every Scottish malt distillery that has ever witnessed its product in a bottle." It's the perfect book to take to your local liquor store next time you're trying to navigate the high shelf of Scotland's highlands, lowlands, and islands. You may laugh at Jackson's description of Auchentoshan Select's "oily" nose with "hints of citrus zest" or Aberlour 10-year-old's "mint-toffee" bouquet. But you'll be laughing out of the other side of your haggis when you actually smell them. All the notes are well researched and designed to appeal to Cardhu-carrying connoisseurs, as well as those who'd just like to know more about Bowmore. In his introduction, the author describes a whisky's finish as "a crescendo, followed by a series of echoes. When I leave the bottle, I like to be whistling the tune." Scotch drinkers will find plenty to wet that whistle in Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch. --Tony Mason

![]() Compact and easy, to use the MyFi offers 150 XM satellite channels. |
The MyFi comes with a densely packed carton of accessories, including everything from headphones and antennas to a remote control, belt clips, and separate docking apparatus for integrating the receiver with your home and car stereos.

An illuminated six-line LCD is your gateway to browsing XM's programming. You can browse by station, by category, or (our favorite) by currently playing artist. Thirty channel presets simplify access to your favorites, and a handy memo button stores artist and song data for up to 20 performances you'd like to look into later (or find again on XM).
Any satellite radio system requires a fairly heavy-duty antenna. Accordingly, the MyFi comes with four: one for the home (place it in a south-facing window), one for the car (mount it on the roof or trunk), a clip-on antenna for when you're hoofing it, and a built-in antenna. Our home reception was perfect--we never experienced a single drop out. Car reception was spottier, though still excellent. You just have to get used to the fact that where analog radio gets noisier in areas with poor reception, satellite radio drops out altogether; it's either all there, crystal clear, or all absent. And that's where My XM, MyFi's recording feature, comes in handy.
![]() The MyFi mounts easily in most vehicles. |
My XM lets you record XM programming to MyFi's onboard memory--perfect for time shifting your listening (as with a news program or a scheduled performance on XM Live) or for tuning in when you'll be someplace lacking XM reception (in a canyon, on a subway, in a windowless cubicle, etc.). You can schedule a recording or start and stop recording at any time you wish, and new recordings pick up where you last stopped. But you can't erase anything unless you clear the memory--which means you can't whittle away songs you don't like to retain your favorites. It's also important to remember that when you've filled the unit's memory (128 MB, or 5+ hours of full bitrate XM radio), it'll record over earlier material, starting from the top. During playback, however, My XM lets you skip easily from track to track and even pick from a list of all tracks.
You can configure the MyFi's LCD to scroll stock and sports-score tickers, a great way to keep an eye on important stats. The receiver also features a built-in sleep timer (15 minutes to 1 hour) and an alarm clock (wake to a beep or to XM programming).
What's in the BoxFor car use, you have a choice of mounting options for the vehicle cradle: flush mount, vent mount, or swivel mount. The cradle houses a power jack for a DC vehicle power adapter (included), an antenna input, and an audio output for use with the provided cassette-shell audio adapter. You can use the cassette adapter or the MyFi's built-in wireless FM transmitter, which turns any FM radio into an XM radio. (Audio quality is better using the supplied cassette audio adapter, however. You may also purchase a wired FM adapter, though XM asserts that the cassette adapter sounds better than that, too.)
![]() The Delphi XM MyFi comes complete with all of the accessories needed to enjoy XM anywhere. |
Positioning the car antenna can be inelegant, despite its heavy-duty magnet. You can have it professionally installed or live with an exposed antenna cord, though XM recommends using "existing holes, body grommets, and other wiring channels" rather than closing a door over the cord on a daily basis. The receiver's battery pack proved good for about five hours between charges. The included earbud headphones are neither comfortable nor particularly well made; a nicer set would represent XM's strong sound quality. --Michael Mikesell
