Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Not what I expected
From the descriptions and reviews (at the time I purchased the book), I thought it was a paranormal romance novel. It read like cheesy porn!!! The dialogue was terrible, the plot was weak, the heroine was incredibly idiotic (I wanted to wring her neck!), the hero is said to be desirable (but not shown to be so), and everything ties up waaay too neatly in the end. I started flipping through pages instead of really reading after the first chapter . . . then, halfway through, I just flipped to the end to read the conclusion because I couldn't take it anymore. The product description is misleading. Should've suspected from the cover.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - The Story Fell Flat for Me
Honestly, the story was a little one-dimensional for me. I had high hopes for this story (thanks to the cover-HOT, HOT, HOT). I didn't see a reason for the main characters to fall in love. There was little interaction between the two of them, outside of the bedroom. And I've read steamier love scenes, for a cheaper price from awesome authors such as Kresley Cole and Angela Knight. Disappointing, sums up this novel for me.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mystical Erotic Fantasy!
Many historical, paranormal and fantasy romances have mentioned sirens, satyrs, selkies, witches, fairies and creatures of the underworld that can shift shape and interact with humans; many in deeply sexual ways. Dawn Thompson is one of the first writers to entertainingly explain this mystical and fantasy world to readers in such a sensual way that the reader actually feels connected, understands, and believes in this other world.

The handsome Simeon is the Lord of the Deep and is a selkie that rules the ocean realm and at times can shed his seal skin and walk the land. Selkies are considered some of the most sensual creatures with high libidos and find nakedness and sexual contact a large part of their need to survive. It is during a time when Simeon and his other selkie consorts shed their skins on land at the ocean's edge that the beautiful Megaleen sees them through her window and is sexually stimulated by Simeon's beauty. Megaleen is a human that has been declared a witch and has been banished to the Isle of the Mists in the Eastern Archipelago, Principalities of Arcus to live with her aunt until she can be taken to the Isle and become a Priestess. But once Simeon sees the beautiful Meg he realizes she is his mate, although human, and takes her to live in his land where he, as The Lord of the Deep has power over the Isle and at times on the land. Under the ocean, with many beautiful and unique sea creatures, within the beautiful, deep, under water palaces, they continue to have many sensual encounters and their love deepens. But can Meg remain immortal like Simeon and can Simeon find a way to help keep her immortal while not losing his ability to lose his selkie self? If you are a reader that is uncomfortable with many sexual scenes, this book may be uncomfortable for you. But if you are a fan of the erotic romance, this book is extremely satisfying, because you will be able to see the beauty and lyrical descriptive fantasy above the sexuality. Not only does it have the erotic sexuality expected in an erotic romance, but the fantasy storyline of another world with many mystical creatures, some evil and working at hurting Meg and Simeon and destroying their love and immortality is a highly satisfying and enjoyable read, because there is an extremely interesting storyline beneath all of the erotic sensuality.

I look forward to the sequel "Lord of the Dark," which is another one of the mystical creatures, this one who lives in the world above the land, who yearns for Meg in this first book, but realizes she truly belongs to Simeon. Dawn Thompson, now gone from us, has left many books behind to be released. As a cancer survivor, this reviewer can relate and embrace the focus of immortality and care of human souls that are lost in this other world of the deep ocean, a place of extensive life in which Ms. Thompson has written. Lord of the Deep is truly a beautiful story overall, well-written and a very satisfying read for the erotic, fantasy and/or paranormal fan to collect and keep.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - I was angry with the heroine doing stupid things. I do not recommend it.
This is definitely an erotica book, since there seem to be more pages devoted to lengthy sex scenes than to the story. The sex scenes were somewhat repetitive.

Meg is a witch living on an island with her evil aunt and uncle. She will become a priestess as long as she is a virgin. She loses her virginity to a selkie, a seal who changes into a man. Now, she cannot be a priestess. She must be a whore for the shamans or die. Her aunt learns that she is not a virgin and sells her to the shamans to be their whore. She escapes and plans to live with her selkie. They are in love.

CAUTION SPOILERS: Meg's evil Aunt Adelia locks Meg away. As Adelia is walking away, Meg then stupidly tells Adelia when and where she can find Simeon. This allows Adelia to steal Simeon's sealskin and tell the shamans how to kidnap Simeon. When the shamans kidnap Simeon, Meg stupidly runs toward them saying let him go, but she has no weapon. So they grab her and now have two prisoners. After she and Simeon have known each other for a couple of days and are in love, she decides she must run away from him because he is immortal and she is human. She does not want to disgust him as she ages. This is stupid. It is like saying "something could happen to separate us down the road so we better break up now so you won't be hurt later. Lets be hurt now instead." Of course, as she runs away, she is captured again by the evil shaman. I was too angry to enjoy the story.

Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: about twenty-eight. Setting: unknown time, The Isle of Mists. Copyright: 2007. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Two Words
I purchased this book based on the strength of the other reviews, and for the fact that it was about creatures other than vampires, werewolves, gargantuan alpha aliens, or fairies. That was a huge plus.

That being said, it's not a badly written book. It's just very sketchy and short on character development and the whole "world" development. Oh, and two little words: mushroom tip. You'll see what I mean. Those two words just about ruined it for me because halfway through the book all I could picture was portobellos. Maybe it works for some, but not for me.

Meg is a witch - though what powers led to her being exiled to the Isle of Mists is never really explained in detail - and lives with her aunt and uncle. Meg is lonely and unfulfilled and has taken to watching the sea at night for selkies, the sea creatures that bask on the rocks as seals during the day. One night on a full moon, she spots the selkies after their transformation, having an orgy on the beach, and her intense interest sends a call to the lord of the deep, Simeon.

If Meg seemed a little dull and one dimensional, all I could think about Simeon was that aside from his looks and sexual prowess, he was a complete dullard. When the whole world knows what your one weakness is, you don't just go around leaving it everywhere for anyone to find, espcially if you're the King of the sea.

I'm not quite sure how or why they fell in love, because aside from the constant sex, there was no real interaction between them and no real development that would explain it.

One reviewer said the story was a little contrived, and that says it better than I can. Buy it for the sex, which was very well written, but don't expect a very deep plot or story around it.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
