Amazon.com:

The instructor, Elise, was kind enough to answer some questions from Amazon.com about the Element line of DVDs.

Why do you think the recent trend for women is to seek the dancer’s silhouette?

Elise: A dancer’s silhouette is the ideal physique for a woman today. It provides strength through lean, elegant, streamlined muscles. The strengthening of the dance conditioning movements will help melt away fat while creating lean musculature that is still feminine and graceful. The stretching element of dance creates length, not only in the muscles, but in the spine as well. Training with ballet conditioning will give a woman a strong, tall slender body.

How did you manage to create a ballet conditioning program that doesn’t use a barre or any other equipment?

Elise: I created a workout that uses the strength of the core to create balance and stability in the body. The sequences on this dvd are both accessible and challenging for anyone! Many ballet conditioning exercises actually don’t use the barre as a weight-bearing tool—it’s only for balance. In this DVD a beginner can use a chair to aid in balance, as they build core strength. A more advanced practitioner can do much of the series without the aid of a chair, simply by bracing the body with the strength of the abdominals, and a lifted, elongated spine.

Who is this workout good for?

Elise: This workout is amazing for women and men of all shapes and sizes! Ballet Conditioning uses one’s own body weight as resistance, so it is safe to do every day, for women AND men… from the strongest athlete, to the ultimate newcomer to fitness. It works to build strong, lean muscle, raise the heart-rate, and speed up metabolism. Dance also helps create rhythm, grace, and balance while building a supple flexible spine. .

What do you think consumers will find different about Element DVDs from other workout programs?

Elise: I know that consumers will enjoy the pure elegance of these DVDs. This is what truly sets the ‘element’ series apart from other brands of DVDs. The Element DVD’s encourage a solid mind/body connection, which encourages practitioners to explore their physical edge, while being truly mentally & emotionally present in the moment. These programs are fluid and graceful in their movement, and provide a HUGE physical fitness element in a nurturing and encouraging environment. .

Tell us about the connection with this DVD and the efforts to reduce global warming.

Elise: Element DVDs support the harmony of mind and body, which encourages a social and global awareness. This harmony encourages us to do what we can to make a difference in the world. For every four Element DVDs sold, a tree will be planted in a national forest. Consumers are therefore doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint, and the dangerous effects of global warming. If we work together, we can spread health and happiness one deep breath at a time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I LOVED this video! I got a great lower body & abs workout!
This was a great workout video. You don't need to have previous knowledge of ballet to do this video. You get a very good workout, and after doing this video, I felt it in my muscles! I'm not a hard-core exerciser and am still working on getting in shape, and have many different exercise videos. With some of the exercise videos that I own, after exercising with the video, I don't feel like I've done much. Not so with this video. There is a heavy emphasis on the lower body; most of the ballet workout concentrates on the legs and buns. The abs part of the workout is more like pilates; gentle, but challenging . There is also a portion of the video where you do ballet jumps to get the cardio going. The workout is challenging enough for more advanced exercisers, but also can be used by beginners. I know this is one exercise video that I'll be using over and over!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great Leg & Ab Workout
I grew up dancing and love this DVD. It's a great leg and ab workout and it's also fun. It doesn't require any equipment and you can do it in a fairly small space at home.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Ballet DVD Out There!
I own at least 10 different ballet DVD's. Used to dance as a teen. I am now a thirty something mother of two who likes to stay fit. I work out 1-2 hours a day and was looking for something, . . just different. I've been dissapointed by the other ballet DVD's out there. If you used to dance you'll know what I mean. A REAL ballet class consists of training at the bar, jumping, and stretching and yes, PLIES, lots of them. This DVD delivers all elements and is filmed quite beautifully. It caters to the beginner but isn't boring for intermediate to advanced excersizers. I only wish that there were more jumping exercises and I don't really like the narration. It borders on the verge of being really annoying. Would have like to hear actual ballet music too. I really hope that they come up with another volume to this workout though, mabe more advanced, because I just love it.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Eh...
I was really excited about this one but it's not that great. I stopped after about 10 minutes because I was pretty bored with the routine. I also agree with the other people that it hurts your knees!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent conditioning workout
I own dozens of exercise dvds and this is by far one of the best. Even experienced exercisers will find this a challenging lower body workout. While the focus of the dvd is the legs and buttocks, after a few uses you will also find yourself feeling taller and slimmer thanks to the stretching and ab exercises that are also included. This is an extremely effective dvd that will give you results in a very short period.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
