Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I lost 113 lbs on Richard Simmons Sweatin' to the oldies
These are great, I tried every diet and "plan" and just couldn't do it. I wouldn't go to a gym or in "public" to workout. I was too embarrassed to exercise in front of people. I carried a picture of myself at my highest weight, and started doing Sweatin' to the Oldies 2 every morning (took a bit to get through the whole tape, but added more and more every day), I changed between the different Sweatin' to the oldies and Disco Sweat (keeps it interesting and I think that helps as you use different muscles some of them). I went from a size 22 to a size 2 (and no I am no spring chicken and have been heavy all my life). I still work out "almost" every day with Richard Simmons and have kept off the weight for 2 years now.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sweatin' To The Oldies is fun to do.
My wife enjoys doing the exercises and the music that accompanies them.
She does them in the privacy of our living room in the morning. Not much results yet, but still fun.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great workouts!
All of Richard Simmons' workouts are very fun to do. My favorite of these workouts is "Sweat and Shout". I have a bad back and knee trouble so these workouts are great for me. You can adjust the level of intensity according to your fitness level. I find that I can get a great workout no matter how my back or knees feel.

The people in the videos are normal everyday people which is nice too. It's a more realistic environment than some of the other aerobic instructors try to portray.

Richard doesn't do very well with the instructions. He doesn't often give cues for change so you need to do the tapes a few times before you really get the routine down. But once you get them down, it's really fun. The music is great! I would recommend these to anyone.

I always look at the descriptions to find which songs are played but they never tell you. So here is a brief run down.

Sweatin' to the Oldies 2: Fever, Windy, Rescue Me, Locomotion, Respect, Jailhouse Rock, Big Girls Don't Cry, Oh-Pretty Woman, Summer In The City, My Boyfriend's Back, and Breakin' Up Is Hard To Do.

Sweatin' to the Oldies 3: Do You Wanna Dance, Gimme Some Lovin', The Name Game, Out Of Limits, Louie-Louie, Build Me Up Buttercup, California Dreaming, Born To Be Wild, Rockin' Robin, I Get Around.

Sweat & Shout: Shout, Heatwave, Proud Mary, Up The Ladder, Devil With A Blue Dress, Someday We'll Be Together, Mony Mony, The Wanderer, Dance To The Music, Shotgun.

They are not by the original artists, however the singers do a pretty good job with them. I'd also recommend "Disco Sweat".

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Workout with a Smile
I'm in the 40+ generation. The music in here is right up this "golden oldies" lover's alley! The workout DVD's are great as well. The first one, Sweatin to the Oldie's 2, has a nice combination of aerobics and light weight/stomach workout. It's a fantastic one to start with. My favorite is the last - Sweat and Shout. After 6 months, I still do this one 3 times a week and still get a good cardiovascular workout. Combined with a sensible eating plan (no fad diet for me), I've lost 55lbs. What's nice about watching this is that you can see how the people who are pretty out of shape do the movements as well as those who are in good shape. You can adjust your movements accordingly. Richard's movements are somewhere in the middle. The only "down" side is that if you are uncoordinated like I am, it takes about 5 or 6 viewings to learn the routine.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A good workout
I've tried several different workout videos and ended up back at these. They are pretty corny, but I like that they portray regular people exercising, not just perfect bodies. The dances, though hard to learn at times, are fun and interesting. There is a good mix of stretching, aerobic, and strengthening exercise. The clothing and hairstyles drive me crazy, but all in all it's the best I've found so far.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
